Cinema ban sparks debate in Saudi Council

DUBAI (AlArabiya.net)

The Saudi Shura (Consultative) Council briefly debated the absence of movie theaters in the kingdom, with some members saying cinemas are inappropriate in the land of the Holy Shrines and others calling for a religiously acceptable "way out".

The debate started when the Council's Culture and Media Committee presented a draft law on a memorandum of understanding between the Saudi Ministry of Culture and Information and the Russian Federal Agency for Culture and Cinematography, the Saudi edition of Al-Hayat reported on Tuesday.

Council Member Azeb Al-Mesbel argued that the spiritual nature of the country that hosts the two Holy Shrines (in Mecca and Medina) should be taken into consideration when dealing with matters of art and culture.

Whereas Member Ahmed al-Turki stressed the necessity to benefit from Russia's experience in cinema arts. He called on religious scholars to find a way to allow movie theaters without contradicting the principles of Islam.

"International directors find inspiration for their movies in Saudi Arabia," said member Mohamed Reda Nasrallah, referring to the newly released movie The Kingdom.

Nasrallah called for the establishment of a "National Film and Theater Association."

Sources who spoke to the newspaper on condition of anonymity explained why Council Chairman, Dr. Saleh bin Hamid, discontinued the debate: "This doesn't mean he was siding with anyone. He was using his right to direct conversations in the Council and ensure they don't digress to side topics."

Regular theatres are not allowed in Saudi Arabia because movies are considered incompatible with the teachings of Islam, as they promote the mingling of @*@@*@@*@es and show examples of immoral behavior.

I really thinks that’s Saudi people are not ready yet for cinemas because now with only the existence of TV channels our teenagers and our young generation are imitating the horrible things that they see in TV, and parents are not able to control what their children see in their own houses so how will they control what they see outside the house.
Thanks for bringing up such a great subject.

Movie theaters existed 30 years ago in Riyadh, and were closed because of the lack of customers due to the VCR's becoming affordable for every household and the easiness of exchanging video tapes. With the spread of video tape movies containing inappropriate scenes, cinemas became controversial and the mainstream was opining that " cinemas are a pure taboo" !

Every technology has both positive and negative sides, and people supporting the ban of cinemas always look at the bad side, ignoring the bright side, entertainment and expansion of knowledge.

Cinemas shall not exist in Makkah or Madinah because they are holy, but elsewhere is not.

In short words, I agree with Ahmed al-Turki conditionally. Cinemas should exist, but shown movies must be censored.

Thanks again

naif i hope u to review u opinion again? coz when cenima allowed no body could control it, and people will not stop pushing to see evry new release of movies, and as u know that 95% of the movies containing a rude scenaries, also later on they will call for family halls ?(they will ask to attend movies with their families) after short period they will ask for joint halls, and i think just thinking about joint theater is horrible it self.

thanks

Dear Ibn M7airqah, we live in a civilized society, there is an order, and the ministry of culture and information will be responsible for censoring the movies and cutting off the inappropriate scenes prior giving the approval to show them in public cinemas. I have been watching movies for a long time, and saying %95 of them include inappropriate scenes is kind of an exaggeration.

As for the joint halls, as you may know, coffee shops with loud music and TV's showing movies have been in business for both genders seperately, and I personally never heard of requesting a joint coffee shop.

In my opinion I do not think that will be succeed due to our Muslims society. I have attended a lot of movies , so I can not imagine these sort of movies will be brought to my country. I appreciate my Islam's rules that keep us away of evildoers.

Thanks Abo Raeed

Dear, my religion and traditions are parts of me, I don't let go about them, nor do I intend to do so, and that's not what we are addressing here. But seriously, let's face it, why is it ok to buy a movie from the store and watch it at home but not in the cinema? Why are we having concerts in Abha and Jeddah while it's purely 7aram? And after all, cinemas, in case they existed, I assure you that they're not going to be forced upon anyone to attend. It's all about you as an individual, you get to make your decision whether you want to go or not.

Enough said about this issue. I enjoyed the debate with you Ibn M7airqah. All the best for you.
